This one-day trek is ideal for someone who wants to experience some trail hiking, see different types of agriculture and mixed forest and visit a variety of nearby ethnic groups. The tour starts on the broad open rice fields of the Namtha Valley and wanders up in to the hills above the valley through a provincial reserve forest. You will see terraced upland rice paddies and visit the Sida ethnic group and the Tibeto-Burman group, this group can only be found in two villages in Laos. One the way back you will stop by the Nam Dee Waterfall and visit the ethnic Lanten village of Ban Nam Dee.

An early start will you give the chance to see and do more along the way. The trip starts on Luang Namtha plain at either a Black Tai or Tai Leu village. Learn a bit about the village before heading up into the hills. The trail will go through mixed forest, upland fields, and terraced paddy and follow streams. Before reaching Sida Village we stop in the forest for a picnic lunch of local Lao food. In Ban Sida visit with the village and learn a bit about the life of these small ethnic in the hills. Return by an old track passing a provincial forest reserve before visiting the Lanten village of Ban Nam Dee and its waterfall park.

8:30 Am depart by songtaew for the ride to Ban Tong Dee or Ban Nam Leu. Stroll the village learning a bit from your guide about life in these low land villages before heading up in to the hills. The trails can become narrow and quite brushy. The trail will go through a variety of forest, upland fields, gardens and paddy. Sections of the trail are steep. Fortunately they are not very long. Enjoy a picnic lunch of Lao food in the forest before visiting the villagers of Ban Sida. Have your guide ask the villagers to tell the story of how they got separated from the relatives by the banana trees growing on the trail. Follow an old track out of Ban Sida through provincial reserve forest. Along the way you will have broad views of the northern part of the Nam Ha NPA. When you reach the Lanten village of Ban Nam Dee relax by the cool, clean waters of the Nam Dee waterfall. The water isn’t deep enough to swim in but the falls make for a wonderful refreshing shower. Bring clothes to get wet in. (L)
