Chai Pi, the Fascinating Life of a Black Hmong Girl

Chai Pi silently sits in luxurious Victoria Sapa resort and spa. She wears a traditional clothes of H’Mong with black-blue background and colorful patterns. She was born and grew up in Sapa - the small tourist town of northwest mountainous region. This town is the ideal place for anyone, who wants to escape from city’s noise or explore the nature.

H’Mong

Chai Pi is a H’Mong. At first, sitting at the hotel, she was seemed to be sad a bit, but when she guide tourists, she leaves a very good impression of her English, as well as her smile. Chai Pi is a great tourist guide. She tell me alot about the life of ethnic in Sapa.

Unlike others, Chai Pi decided to be a tourist guide, instead of being a farmer. She says she love this job. Suprisingly, she can speak English fluently and a little French, Spanish and Japanese without professional training.

The normal life

In Laochai village, the education system is still out-of-date. English is not taught in primary schools, while many people do not continue learning in secondary schools. Evenmore, almost only boys are allowed to learn. Girls will stay at home to do housework or work on farms.

The first H’Mong using Facebook

Chai Pi have used Facebook from 2007. She loves Facebook, because through it, she can see friends’ images and chat with them.
